MLB Reveals Umpire Assignments for Mets-Padres Wild Card Series

The 2022 MLB regular season officially wrapped up on Wednesday, and all eyes immediately turn to the upcoming postseason. October is here, meaning 12 teams will battle it out for an opportunity to take home this year's World Series title.

The playoffs with a quartet of Wild Card Round matchups, including the 5-seed San Diego Padres visiting the 4-seed New York Mets. Probable pitchers and roster decisions have been released ahead of Friday's series opener.

In addition, MLB revealed the official umpiring crews for this Padres-Mets matchup.

NL Wild Card Round

MLB insider Kyle Glaser tweeted out a graphic of the umpires assigned to this series. It's a six-man crew, as is customary in MLB postseason matchups, with umpires situated down the foul lines in both left and right field. The following is a list of Game 1 posts.

HP: Adrian Johnson
1B: Chris Guccione
Chris Conroy
Alfonso Marquez (Crew Chief)
Bruce Dreckman
Ben May

Glaser also reports that Guccione will take over home plate duties for Game 2, and Chris Conroy will be behind the plate in Game 3 if necessary. Alfonso Marquez is the crew chief.

This particular umpire crew rates all over the place, according to Umpire Scorecards' grading system. In terms of overall accuracy, Johnson rates in just the 24th percentile of all recorded umpires. Meanwhile, Guccione is in the 54th percentile and Conroy is in the 36th percentile.

It'll be interesting to see if any of these umpires are forced to make a dramatic call. Fortunately, the introduction of a replay system largely negates any atrocious on-field calls, but the strike zone is harder to standardize and remains immune to replay reviews.
