Mike McDaniel Confirms Dolphins' Backup QB Plans for Week 6

Updated:

The Miami Dolphins are navigating a difficult quarterback situation ahead of Week 6. Starter Tua Tagovailoa has already been ruled out, and it's unclear if primary backup Teddy Bridgewater will also be sidelined due to concussion protocol.

Though there's some uncertainty right now, Miami has its backup QB plans already determined for any scenario.

Head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters that Bridgewater still has yet to clear protocol on Friday. If he's cleared by Saturday, the veteran QB will then serve as backup for starter Skylar Thompson. Should Bridgewater not be cleared, then practice squad signal-caller Reid Sinnett will get the call-up for Sunday.

This news at least clears up any worries about how the team would handle backup QB situation. Now it's just up to Bridgewater's ability to clear concussion protocol.

Having the experienced signal-caller available would be a huge comfort with the rookie Thompson drawing his first career start. The Dolphins' offense will need to execute at a high level if they're to keep up against the Minnesota Vikings, and it'd be nice to have Bridgewater active in case a switch needs to be made.

Otherwise, it'll be Thompson and Sinnett holding down the QB spot. Sinnett hasn't attempted an NFL pass since entering the league in 2020, meaning he'll likely be an emergency option only in case Thompson goes down.

Down potentially two quarterbacks, Miami enters Sunday's contest as a 3-point underdog, according to FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds.
