Mets Announce Franchise Legend to Return for Old Timers' Game

The list of names attending the New York Mets Old Timers' day at Citi Field on August 27 is growing with each passing day. The team announced on Thursday that outfielder Darryl Strawberry will be in attendance for his first on-field appearance in a Mets uniform since last played for them in 1990.

It's important to note that Strawberry will not be participating in any batting practice or game situations due to his knee and shoulder issues. Nevertheless, it will be great to see a player cemented on the Mets Wall of Fame back to support his teammates and celebrate the 1986 World Series.

Strawberry was the first overall pick of the 1980 MLB Draft and spent eight years with the Mets, earning seven All-Star nods. He was named the National League's Rookie of the Year in 1983 and still owns the franchise record for home runs (252). Strawberry's power was an integral part of the lineup.

In terms or Wins Above Replacement (WAR), Strawberry is the second-best position player in Mets history, behind only David Wright. The 60-year-old spends his current days as a traveling speaker that focuses on teaching kids about the dangers of substance abuse using his own experiences.

Other notable players set to attend the Mets Old Timers' Day include Johan Santana, Mike Piazza, Pedro Martinez, Ron Darling, Frank Thomas, Billy Wagner, Daniel Murphy and more. The ceremonies will begin roughly two hours prior to first pitch against the Colorado Rockies at 7:10 p.m. ET.
