Mariners Reveal Wild Card Game 1 Starter

The Seattle Mariners are going back to the MLB Postseason. Seattle's 2022 playoff berth ends the 21-year playoff drought, which was the longest running in all of the four major professional American sports.

The Mariners pitching staff has been a huge part of that. They head into the final day of the season with the 7th-best team ERA in the majors. On Tuesday, Mariners manager Scott Servais officially named his Game 1 starter for the American League Wild Card Series against the Toronto Blue Jays – none other than Luis Castillo.

Luis Castillo was acquired from the Reds at the trade deadline this season in a blockbuster deal that gave the Mariners the true long term ace of their staff they had long sought.

Castillo has been great for the Mariners since coming over from Cincinnati, pitching to a 4-2 record with a 3.17 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 65 1/3 innings. It's not necessarily a surprise Castillo is named the Game 1 starter, that spot is traditionally held for the team's best pitcher, but with the series starting immediately after the end of the regular season, the timing doesn't always line up.

Seattle kicks off its ALWC series against the Blue Jays in Toronto on Friday, October 7. FanDuel Sportsbook currently lists them as a +154 underdog to win the series, according to their latest MLB odds.
