Kyler Murray Fantasy Outlook & Injury Update 2022 (Watch Out For Slow Start)
Kyler Murray has been one of the more prominent figures in NFL headlines this offseason due to a contract extension dispute. Now that his five-year, $230.5 million deal is official, fans are hoping that he can build on last season's performance as the QB10 in fantasy football.
Murray is one of the top young quarterbacks in the league, proving his worth both through the air and on the ground. But does he have what it takes to take his game to the next level during the upcoming NFL fantasy season?
Kyler Murray Fantasy Football Outlook
Murray suited up for 14 games in his third-NFL campaign, ending the year with 333 completions, 3,787 passing yards and 24 touchdowns to 10 interceptions. Furthermore, the Bedford, TX native also ran the ball 88 times, converting those attempts into 423 yards and five rushing TDs.
Though his potential can't be argued, Murray does have some obstacles in his way this year. For starters, star wideout DeAndre Hopkins is suspended for the first six games of the year, taking away one of the young signal-caller's top weapons.
On top of that, the Cardinals also lost wide receiver Christian Kirk in free agency, along with pass-catching running back Chase Edmonds. While the team did bring in Marquise Brown to help, it's going to be up to him, A.J. Green, Rondale Moore and Zach Ertz to make life easier for Murray until Hopkins returns.
Needless to say, it might be a rougher start to the year for Murray's fantasy production. Nevertheless, once Hopkins is back, it should be back to business as usual.
Kyler Murray Injury Update
The Cardinals received some bad news on Monday when it was revealed that Murray tested positive for COVID-19. He's now set to stay away from the team for the next five days, putting his training camp routines on pause.
The good news is that the Cardinals said that Murray's symptoms are minor at worse and he's expected to make a speedy recovery. He shouldn't have any issue with being good to go ahead of the 2022 NFL season.
Murray also missed three games last year thanks to a nagging ankle injury. The ankle ailment is behind the young signal-caller, the first time he missed time due to injury in his three-year career.
Kyler Murray Projections
Projections from the NFL odds on FanDuel Sportsbook aren't too high on Murray. One example is that he's available at only +3000 odds (T-No. 14) to be the league's passing yards leader. He also has +3000 odds (T-No. 13) to pace the NFL in passing TDs this season.
Despite FanDuel's doubts, Murray's projecting passing yards total is set at 4,000.5 with -112 odds on both the over and under. That's a total that he's yet to reach in his career. He averaged 11.4 yards per completion last year, meaning he'd need to connect on about 351 passes to hit the over — 18 more than he recorded in 2021.
FanDuel also has his projected rushing yards total listed at 500.5 with -112 odds on both sides as well.
Is Kyler Murray a Good Fantasy Football Pick?
Dual-threat quarterbacks are incredibly valuable in fantasy football, making Murray a top-10 option once again. Having said that, Hopkins' absence could hinder his ceiling for the first six weeks and there's no telling if he'll have a connection with Brown or if players like Green and Moore can step up.
Fantasy Pros is incredibly high on Murray, ranking him as the QB5 in PPR formats with an average draft position of 58.7. He also ranks as QB5 in The Duel's preseason PPR fantasy rankings. If you're planning on rolling with Murray as your starting quarterback, you'll likely have to make plans to select him before the fifth round ends (in 12-team formats).
