Keeneland Horse Racing Picks for Sunday 10/16/22

Updated:

Starting at 1:00 p.m. ET, we have 9 races Sunday at Keeneland.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and monitor the weather and track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions).

Leading jockey Luis Saez rides Julia Shining for top trainer Todd Pletcher. She makes her debut and is a full sister to the multiple Grade 1 winner and Champion, Malathaat.

Race 7 is the $300,000 Franklin Stakes for fillies and mares sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf. A full field of 12 runners and the numberFire data projects Caravel (4/1) and Change of Control (5/1) to decide the winner.

Horse Racing Nation's Super Screener also rates Caravel and Twilight Gleaming (7/2) as top win contenders along with Bout Time (8/1) and Star Divine (10/1), who offer top value and strong consideration on top and in the Trifecta and Superfecta.

Twilight Gleaming won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint last Nov, and enters off two straight wins. She's also 7 for 7 in the Exacta (top-2) sprinting on turf with her lifetime best speed race over this turf track in April.

3. Junipermarshmallow and Stay Lost, Race 9

FanDuel Racing Odds: 10/1 and 3/1

Race 9 is another full field of 12 and 2-year-old fillies going 1 1/16 miles on the turf. The numberFire algorithym calls for a strong race and potential win on Junipermarshmallow (10/1) with Stay Lost (3/1) a top win contender.

Top jockey's Luis Saez and John Velazquez ride those two choices. Stay Lost comes out of some tough races facing better fillies including a third place finish last race.
