Joe Musgrove Suffers Setback in Injury Rehab

Updated:

The San Diego Padres have gotten back on track after a 3-4 start to the season with three straight victories, which is impressive considering they are working with a weakened starting rotation. Joe Musgrove continues to rehab a toe injury in the minor leagues and recently suffered a small setback.

Joe Musgrove Injury Update

Padres manager Bob Melvin stated Musgrove "tweaked" his shoulder as he attempted to make a play in his rehab start for the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas. The veteran right-hander will only have his next outing pushed back by a day or two as a result, meaning the outcome could've been much worse.

Musgrove opened the 2023 season on the injured list (IL) after he fractured his toe in spring training. Melvin didn't seem concerned about the setback, so a mid-April return to the majors seems to still be the target for Musgrove. A debut in a series against the Braves or Diamondbacks should be on tap.

Nick Martinez and Ryan Weathers have stepped up in place of Musgrove in a six-man rotation, yet neither one has been impressive so far. Keep in mind Musgrove was an All-Star for the Padres last season. He finished the year with a 10-7 record to go along with a 2.93 ERA and 1.08 WHIP (30 starts).

As it stands, the Padres have odds set at +1000 to win the World Series, per FanDuel Sportsbook.
