Jahan Dotson Fantasy Outlook Comes With Considerable Risk in Week 2

Updated:

In his very first NFL start, rookie wide receiver Jahan Dotson enjoyed a breakout fantasy football performance. The Washington Commanders playmaker finished Week 1 as WR17 and was a pleasant surprise for the 55% of fantasy managers that rostered him in ESPN leagues.

As comfortable as Dotson looked in Week 1, fantasy managers need to take a step back and evaluate before crowning him as the next rookie phenom, ala Ja'Marr Chase in 2021.

Taking his entire stat line into consideration, fantasy managers need to pump the brakes on the Dotson hype. All the evidence you need is seen in Washington's Week 1 target share.

Dotson finished with just five of the Commanders targets in Week 1, ranking behind Curtis Samuel (11), Antonio Gibson (8) and Logan Thomas (6). He caught only three of those passes, and two happened to be in the end zone.

Low-target, high touchdown receivers are a fantasy manager's worst nightmare, simply because of the high-variance and unpredictability of those performances.

Another factor to consider is Terry McLaurin. McLaurin is the clear-cut No. 1 wideout on this roster. There's no denying that. And McLaurin finished the week with just 4 targets.

It was quite clear Washington's game plan will adjust, simply to give their best wide receiver more opportunities. This is also a gentle reminder to not overreact to a Week 1 performance.

Dotson is not even listed in The Duel's Week 2 PPR rankings, and comes in all the way down at WR43 in Fantasy Pros' weekly rankings.

The rookie should not be trusted with anything more than a FLEX play in Week 2, and even that's risky.
