Hornets Get Update on Kelly Oubre's Injury Return Timeline

Updated:

Injury troubles have played a massive role in the Charlotte Hornets' struggles this season. The latest player go down is forward Kelly Oubre Jr., who's missed three of the last four games with a hand issue.

Now it turns out Oubre's sprain is much more serious than previously thought.

The wing needs to underdog surgery for a torn ligament in his left hand, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania. The procedure is expected to knock Oubre out for the next 4-6 weeks.

This injury is a massive blow to a Hornets team that's just starting to get healthy again. Oubre has taken on a larger load in this offense with the likes of LaMelo Ball and Gordon Hayward both experiencing extended absences this season. He's excelled while operating as a primary option, averaging a career-high 22.3 points per game along with 5.6 rebounds a night.

Charlotte will now be forced to make do without its second-leading scorer for the foreseeable future. Terry Rozier and Hayward should see their roles increase as Steve Clifford attempts to fill the void left by Oubre.

The Hornets are currently tied for the worst mark to win the title at +50000, according to FanDuel Sportsbook's NBA championship odds.
