Here's What the Twins Could Offer in a Luis Castillo Trade

After finishing in the AL Central's basement in 2021, the Minnesota Twins currently lead their division with a 50-44 record heading into the second half of the 2022 MLB campaign. If the Twins want to secure their spot, adding some pitching help ahead of next month's trade deadline would be wise.

The Athletic's C. Trent Rosecrans sees Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Luis Castillo as a potential fit for the Twins. Rosecrans spoke with team insider Dan Hayes about what Minnesota could potentially send to Cincinnati to land the two-time All-Star.

Twins Trade Rumors

According to Hayes, a potential package that would send Castillo to the Twins would include prospects Spencer Steer and Simeon Woods Richardson, as well as Josh Winder, going to Cincinnati. He added that Austin Martin was once thought of as a potential piece, but has been overtaken by Steer.

It's hard not to see why the Reds would love to get their hands on Steer. The former 2019 third-round pick has played well in 74 games across Double- and Triple-A so far this season, racking up 23 doubles, 19 home runs and 58 RBIs while slashing .278/.363/.559.

Meanwhile, Woods Richardson opened last year as Baseball America's No. 69-ranked prospect. The 21-year-old pitcher has looked great with Double-A Wichita so far this season, going 2-3 in 11 starts with a 3.40 ERA with 53 strikeouts over just as many innings.

Unlike the other two potential pieces, Winder has actually played in the Majors this season. Though he's spent time in Triple-A as well, the Richmond, VA native has made 10 appearances (six starts) for the Twins in 2022, pitching to a 3.77 ERA while striking out batters and issuing 14 walks in 45.1 innings.

Hayes' proposal is a steep price, but it'll be worth it if it lands the Twins a quality pitcher like Castillo. After all, he's the type of player that can help the organization win its first championship in over 30 years.
