Gulfstream Horse Racing Picks for Saturday 1/28/23

Updated:

The Gulfstream Championship Meet continues, and starting at 11:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, we have 13 races. Included are separate picks on the two Pegasus World Cup races.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, monitor the weather and keep an eye on the track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races after adjusting for track, distances, and conditions).

Race 6 is the $150,000 La Prevoyante Stakes for older fillies and mares going a route of 1 1/2 miles on the turf. The numberFire data picks the favorite Adventuring (7/5) to win with Transient (4/1) and Beside Herself (5/1) projected to finish in the money across the board.

Top Race Reports (TRR) and the East Coast Handicapping Report (ECHR) likes Transient with solid jockey Tyler Gaffalione riding. But Personal Best (7/2) is the pick to win with top jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. riding for trainer Shug McGaughey. Personal Best moves from a 1 1/16 Tapeta race to this 1 1/2 mile turf race. She's in good health and has nice action and a desire to go longer with a good effort expected off her 100 speed figure last month at Gulfstream.

2. Harlan Estate and Channel Maker, Race 9

FanDuel Racing Odds: 20/1 and 3/1

Race 9 is the $200,000 Grade 3 William L. McKnight Stakes for older horses at 1 1/2 miles on the turf. It's the start of the Late Pick 5 which includes the final two Pegasus World Cup races.

The numberFire algorithm shows the top 3 finishers as Channel Maker (3/1), Temple (9/2) and Red Knight (9/2). Tyler Gaffalione rides Channel Maker quickly from the gate for top respected trainer Bill Mott. Channel Maker makes his 50th start as a 9-year-old with still solid speed figures.

Top Race Reports likes Channel Maker and longshot Harlan Estate (20/1) with solid risk/reward coming in from Woodbine. Top jockey Joel Rosario rides Harlan Estate in the most wide open stakes race of the day.

3. Miles D and Picking Up Pennies, Race 10

FanDuel Racing Odds: 3/1 and 8/1

Race 10 is the $150,000 Grade 3 Fred W. Hooper Stakes for older horses at 1 mile. Miles D (3/1) gets the call by numberFire's data with Mish (6/1) and Black Belt (6/1) projected to hit the board. Top Race Reports also likes Miles D from the rail with Joel Rosario riding for top trainer Chad Brown. Off for nearly a year, but great action,

Trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. trains Mish, along with three other runners in the 13-horse field (1 scratch) - Picking Up Pennies (8/1), The Reds (12/1), and Twelve Volt Man (8/1) on the outside with top UK rider Frankie Dettori.
