Guardians Get Bad News With Oscar Gonzalez Injury Update

Updated:

The Cleveland Guardians are right in the thick of an AL Central title race heading into July, which makes outfielder Oscar Gonzalez's latest injury update a brutal blow. The rookie was placed on the injured list on Saturday with an abdominal issue and will miss at least 10 days of action.

Oscar Gonzalez Injury Update

Gonzalez was a notable scratch prior to Cleveland's Thursday night game after reporting some discomfort to the training staff. He underwent an MRI on Friday and the results were enough to warrant a break from baseball activities. A return date has yet to be set for the 24-year-old.

This is not the news Guardians fans wanted to hear. Gonzalez has sparked the offense since being called up on May 26, slashing .285/.315/.431 across 32 games. He has also logged 12 runs scored, 12 doubles, 2 home runs and 14 RBI. Replacing that level of production won't be an easy task.

The Guardians have called up Gabriel Arias from Triple-A to take Gonzalez's spot on the roster for now. The 22-year-old has registered eight MLB at-bats this season, tallying one hit. He owns a slash line of .196/.282/.340 to go along with 4 stolen bases at the minor league level in 2022 (26 games).

Left-hander Kirk McCarty was also called up for his second career MLB start as Cleveland takes on the New York Yankees in a doubleheader. The Guardians are +240 underdogs on the moneyline in Game 1 and +148 underdogs on the moneyline in Game 2, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
