Giants Reveal Stance on Keeping Mike Yastrzemski After 2022 Season

Sitting 10.5 games back of the final NL Wild Card spot, it doesn't look like the San Francisco Giants will make the MLB playoffs. Some Giants fans have already turned their attention towards the offseason, especially where outfielder Mike Yastrzemski's future is concerned.

Yastrzemski has been experiencing a down year, leaving people wondering if he'll be in a Giants uniform next spring. Fortunately, team president Farhan Zaidi revealed exactly what San Francisco plans on doing with the 32-year-old once the 2022 season concludes.

Zaidi told KNBR 680 on Thursday that the Giants "view [Yastrzemski] as part of this team going forward." The former Baltimore Orioles 14th-round pick is set to undergo arbitration this offseason, with The Athletic's Andrew Baggarly projecting that Yastrzemski will be awarded around $5 million.

It was only two seasons ago that Yastrzemski finished eighth in NL MVP voting. Granted, that was a COVID-shortened season, but it still showed that something special was there. Unfortunately, he hasn't come close to replicating that success and the current season highlights that.

Yastrzemski has suited up in 117 games for the Giants this season, tallying 12 home runs and 44 RBIs while slashing .203/.303/.361. For comparison, he had 10 HRs and 35 RBIs in only 54 games in 2020 and even had 25 homers while driving in 71 runs just last year.

Nevertheless, Yastrzemski has a 1.2 WAR, so he's still a positive asset to the Giants. Hopefully, he takes time this offseason to get his head straight because he makes San Francisco a lot better when he's playing his best brand of baseball.
