Free Agency Rumors Link Bengals to Top Available Running Back

Updated:

The Cincinnati Bengals' running back situation is murky as free agency gets underway. Joe Mixon was already a potential salary cap cut candidate, but now with potential off-the-field issues, his future is even more clouded.

Given this uncertainty, it should be no surprise the team has now been linked to a top available RB option.

Tyler Dunne of GoLongTD.com reports the Bengals are one of "several teams" eyeing Jamaal Williams. With the Detroit Lions signing David Montgomery on Tuesday night, it appears Williams' run in the Motor City is over.

The Lions went into last season with a solid running back duo of D'Andre Swift and Williams in the backfield. Swift struggled with injuries all year, but in his absence, Williams delivered stellar play. He led the NFL in rushing touchdowns (17) and hit 1,000 yards on the ground for the first time ever.

Getting a second legitimate back to share the workload with Mixon (who's a better pass-catcher) isn't the worst idea. The departure of Semaje Perine also has created a hole on the depth chart, and Williams would be a premier insurance option in case the oft-injured Mixon goes down at any point.

There are a lot of moving parts here, but regardless, it's exciting for Bengals fans to know they're in the mix for one of the better free-agent running backs.
