Derek Carr Contract Extension Includes Intriguing Detail

Updated:

The Las Vegas Raiders locked down their starting quarterback for the foreseeable future when they signed Derek Carr to a three-year contract extension on Wednesday morning. It's worth noting the new deal includes a no-trade clause, which indicates just how committed the front office is to Carr.

Carr is already the longest-tenured QB in the AFC and everything lines up for him to hold that title for a while. The extension adds $121.5 million to his existing deal and makes the 31-year-old the fifth-highest paid QB on an annual basis. Carr will be the key to any future Super Bowl hopes in Las Vegas.

What makes the no-trade clause so interesting is the fact that Carr has been the focal point of various trade rumors over the past few years. The three-time Pro Bowler looked revitalized in 2021, though, as he led the Raiders to a playoff berth and ranked fifth in the NFL in passing yards (4,804).

Reports claim the negotiation period went fast once both sides realized they wanted the same thing. Carr loves playing in Las Vegas and gets a chance to play with his Pro Bowl wide receiver Davante Adams. Meanwhile, the Raiders secure a QB in what seems to be an ever-changing market.

The Raiders will aim to do something they haven't done in over 20 years next season and that is make an appearance in the Super Bowl. Las Vegas currently has odds set at +700 to win the AFC West division and odds set at +4000 to win the Super Bowl, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
