Del Mar Horse Racing Picks for Thursday 7/28/22

Updated:

Starting at 5:00 p.m. ET, we have 8 races Sunday at Del Mar, "Where the Turf meets the Surf."

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and monitor the weather and track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions).

Race 6 is an Allowance race for fillies and mares at 1 3/8 miles on the turf. The numberFire projection is Scarabea (3/1) to win in front of With This Vow (4/1) and Queen Ofthe Temple (4/1), who both break from the outside in the 10-horse field and are suggested win wagers of horseman and handicapper Top Race Reports.

With This Vow should be running along the lead looking to get the distance, while hard knocking filly Queen Ofthe Temple is fit and finished third with a 102 speed figure in a Grade 3 race in May at 1 1/2 miles.

2. Connnie Swingle, Race 7

FanDuel Racing Odds: 8/5

Race 7 is the $175,000 Fleet Treat Stakes for Cal-bred 3-year-old fillies racing 7 furlongs. Connie Swingle (8/5) is the prohibitive favorite of eight runners and the top pick according to numberFire's data. She's won 4-of-6 starts including her two recent, plus has a pair of runner-up finishes for EPO trainer Phil D'Amato.

Fun to Dream (5/2) for controversial trainer Bob Baffert won her debut in May, and has been pointed to this stakes start with solid training and a pair of bullet works since.

3. Queen's Code and Oubabe, Race 8

FanDuel Racing Odds: 5/2 and 9/5

Race 8 is a Maiden Special Weight for state-breds going 1-mile on the turf. A full field of runners is expected to be decided by Queen's Code (5/2) and Oubabe (9/5) breaking from the No. 9 and 10 posts, according to numberFire projections. Top Race Reports and the West Coast Handicapping report agree.

Oubabe has four consecutive runner-up finishes this year looking to break through with regular rider and top jockey Juan Hernandez aboard. He's be running along the lead again with a cutback in distance the difference.

Queen's Code also has a pair of recent close runner-up finishes including one by a nose. Those came after a 1-year-layoff, and the connections have handled this 5-year-old patiently.
