Cubs Land Major Steal in ESPN's Final Mock Draft

Updated:

The 2022 MLB Draft begins on Sunday, July 19 and one of the teams to watch is the Chicago Cubs, who'll be drafting seventh overall in Round 1. While the Cubs could go multiple directions with their first-round selection, ESPN is projecting them to land a major steal in the site's final mock draft.

MLB insider Kiley McDaniel is projecting that the Cubs will land IMG Academy High School and University of Miami recruit Elijah Green at No. 7. The club's fanbase would be thrilled if this becomes a reality because it was only a few weeks ago that the outfield prospect was in contention to go first overall.

There wasn't a baseball that Green didn't like to hit as a junior and senior at IMG Academy. In his final two high school seasons, the 18-year-old racked up 61 hits, 15 home runs and 53 RBIs. He also batted .462 as a senior and showcased his defensive skill with a .970 fielding percentage.

The Cubs already have exciting outfield prospects like Brennen Davis and Pete Crow-Armstrong. Adding Green to that mix would certainly help solidify the outfield room for years to go, especially if he can reach the high expectations already set on his shoulders.

Baseball fans can watch Day 1 of the 2022 MLB Draft on ESPN and the MLB Network when it kicks off on Sunday at 7 p.m. ET.
