Crazy Nick Mullens Stat Proves He's Better Than You Think

When San Francisco 49ers' starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo went down with a ankle injury in Week 2, there wasn't much hype surrounding the idea of backup quarterback Nick Mullens stepping up and consistently winning games in his absence.

However, Mullens has proven over the course of his young career to be a more than capable starting quarterback and this statistic proves just that.

Anytime you are mentioned in the same realm as Patrick Mahomes, it means you're doing something right. Mullens can sling the football with the best of them. In the eight games he started for the 49ers in 2018, Mullens averaged 284.6 passing yards per game and threw 13 touchdowns.

Now, Mullens is not a all-pro caliber quarterback by any means, sporting a 4-5 career record as a starting quarterback and having thrown 11 interceptions in 11 career games. He is someone capable of winning a few games before Jimmy Garoppolo is back and 100 percent healthy, though.

In a Week 3 win over the New York Giants, Mullens was 25-of-36 for 343 yards and a touchdown. He had a 108.9 passer rating and would most likely currently start for a number of teams in the NFL. In fact, the 49ers received multiple trade offers for Mullens in the offseason, but shut them all down as they knew how important it is to have an experienced backup quarterback in this league.

Mullens and the 49ers take on the 0-2-1 Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football in Week 4. They are 7-point favorites heading into the game, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
