Brewers Reveal Disappointing Freddy Peralta Injury Return Timeline

The Brewers' highly-touted starting rotation took a major hit when Freddy Peralta suffered a serious shoulder strain in his last start. The news isn't getting any better, either, as the team's President of Baseball Operations David Stearns said Peralta's return timeline is pointing toward August right now.

Peralta is still expected to be back at some point during the regular season, but the Brewers will be without a reliable starter for at least two months. The 25-year-old complained of tightness against the Washington Nationals and an MRI taken afterward confirmed a posterior shoulder strain.

The 2021 National League All-Star was off to an uncharacteristically bad start in 2022, posting a 4.42 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in eight starts. He had also struck out 50 batters and walked 13 across 38.2 innings pitched. Aaron Ashby is expected to take Peralta's spot in the rotation moving forward.

Ashby pitched 5.2 innings against the San Diego Padres on Sunday and gave up only 1 unearned run in a win. The 24-year-old logged 5 strikeouts and 12 groundball outs on his way to improving his season ERA to 2.91. Ethan Smalls is a name to watch, too, as he impresses at the Triple-A level.

The Brewers hope getting Peralta back just before the postseason will be just the boost they need to make their first World Series appearance since 1982. For now, Milwaukee sits 3.5 games up in first place of the NL Central and has odds set at +1100 to win it all, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
