Braves' Opening Contract Offer to Dansby Swanson Revealed

The Atlanta Braves are heading into a crucial offseason after a disappointing end in 2022 that saw them fail to repeat as World Series champs. With plenty of things to address on their roster, at the top of the list is shortstop Dansby Swanson's free agency.

Swanson will be one of a handful of stellar free agent shortstops on the market this offseason, and as a Georgia native, people familiar with the situation believes Swanson wants to stay in Atlanta.

After a career year in 2022, that saw him play in all 162 games, hit 25 home runs, 96 RBI and slash .277/.329/.447, the Braves want him back too. Atlanta has never been one to hand out incredibly large contracts to free agents. Yes, in a vacuum, they have, but what Atlanta has done recently is sign young stars to long term deals before they are required to and get them at a discount. It's what they did with Austin Reilly, Spencer Strider and Ronald Acuna, who might be the biggest bargain in sports.

Dansby Swanson Contract Offer

When they let franchise cornerstone Freddie Freeman hit free agency last year, they lost those negotiations and he ended up with the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Now, we get our first look at the Braves' initial offer to Swanson, which is reportedly in the ballpark of $100 million, according to the New York Post. There was no indication of how many years that was for, but you would have to assume with that total value, it would be in the 5-6 year range.

That is surely less than what many experts were predicting heading into the offseason. Swanson will most likely test the market and see what other offers look like before accepting anything. The Braves would have to blow him out of the water with an offer, and if the report is correct, that number doesn;t come close to "blow him out of the water" territory.
