Athletics News: Oakland First-Round Draft Pick Max Muncy Contract Signed

Updated:

As more days pass since the 2021 MLB Draft ended, teams have begun signing their newest prospects to their first contracts. The Oakland Athletics are just one of the latest clubs to get one of their latest highly-touted talents under contract.

The Athletics signed 2021 first-round pick shortstop Max Muncy to a $2,850,000 contract, according to Baseball America's Carlos Collazo. This contract sees Oakland paying Muncy $107,700 above the $2,740,300 value assigned to 25th overall picks, making this an over-slot deal.

Muncy has already been getting a lot of attention around the MLB and its fans, mainly because he shares a name with a certain Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star infielder with the same name. Funny enough, the Athletics actually drafted the elder Muncy (no relation) back at the 2012 draft, so this is a bit of a re-do on their part.

Nevertheless, the younger Muncy has the potential to become a role player for the Athletics in the future. As a senior in high school this season, he recorded career highs in hits (32), home runs (6), and RBIs (29). There's also his mind-blowing slash line, which stood at .485/.585/.909. That's obviously a smaller sample size and high school baseball isn't really comparable to the MLB, however, it shows that Muncy does have the potential to be something special.
