3 Most Likely Free Agent Destinations for Carlos Rodon

The MLB's free agency period is here, leaving no shortage of arms out there to help bolster any of the 30 clubs' starting rotations. Out of the available starters out there, veteran soutphaw and two-time All-Star Carlos Rodon is one name that's sure to get plenty of attention.

Rodon was lights out with the San Francisco Giants in 2022. Making a career-high 31 starts, the 29-year-old went 14-8 with a 2.88 ERA and 1.028 WHIP, pacing the entire MLB with 12.0 strikeouts per nine innings. His efforts resulted in a second straight All-Star appearance.

Being a great option to improve any given pitching staff, here are three of the most likely free agent destinations for Rodon this offseason.

Carlos Rodon Free Agency

1. San Francisco Giants

Just because Rodon declined his contract option last week doesn't mean a reunion with the Giants is out of the question. San Francisco is still clearly interested in the lefty, made evident by the club extending his qualifying offer. Rodon only spent one season in the Bay Area, so it's entirely possible that he feels like he has unfinished business. That's especially true if his goal is to play for a contender since the Giants are on the right path with arms like Logan Webb and Alex Cobb already in the rotation. Taking into account that Rodon has been nothing but positive about his time in San Francisco, don't be shocked if he winds up re-signing with the Giants.

2. Milwaukee Brewers

Outside of Eric Lauer, the Milwaukee Brewers' starting pitching depth is made up of righties. Signing Rodon would certainly address any lack of left-handed depth. Not only that but Rodon would be attractive to the Brewers due to his availability. Milwaukee's rotation was plagued by injuries, especially as far as Freddy Peralta is concerned. Meanwhile, Rodon has played 55 games over the last two seasons, proving that he's ready to be called upon more often than not. With the Brewers also have been a top-10 team when it comes to getting left-handed batters to strike out, adding Rodon would help them stay at that level going forward.

3. New York Mets

One of the biggest free agents of the offseason is none other than Jacob deGrom. So what do the New York Mets do if their ace opts to sign elsewhere? Bring in Rodon. There's obviously no perfectly replacing someone with deGrom's talents, but signing Rodon would soften the blow by a lot. The Mets should be an enticing destination due to their contender status, as well as the fact that the pressure wouldn't solely be on Rodon's shoulders. He'd be in a rotation with the likes of Max Scherzer and Carlos Carrasco, who are both more than capable of stepping up when needed. Assuming the trio can live up to their potential, New York would easily have one of the top rotations in the Majors yet ago.
