3 Free Agents the White Sox Need to Target This Offseason

Gone are the days when the Chicago White Sox were expected to be World Series contenders before the 2022 MLB season began. Fast forward to October when the White Sox are sitting on the postseason sidelines yet again after finishing the year with an underwhelming 81-81 record.

Now, general manager Rick Hahn must look to the offseason to figure out how to improve his team. The White Sox finished just five games back of the final AL Wild Card spot, so better days could be around the corner if Hahn brings in the right free agents to help make that jump.

Chicago White Sox Free Agency

1. Brandon Drury, IF/OF

Yoan Moncada didn't provide much offensive support for the White Sox this season. The veteran third baseman only hit 12 home runs and 51 RBIs in 104 games while recording a career-worst .212 batting average. While Moncada is still under contract, Chicago might want to consider moving on from him for someone like Brandon Drury. The 30-year-old racked up career-highs in HRs (28) and RBIs (87) this season while slashing .263/.320/.492. Even if the White Sox want to keep Moncada, Drury can play any position except centerfield and catcher, highlighting his versatility. If he can add even more experience by winning the World Series with the San Diego Padres, Drury is the type of player that can take the White Sox to the next level.

2. Andrew Chafin, RP

One of the White Sox's biggest weaknesses was their bullpen. Their relievers combined for a 4.00 ERA, ranking fourth-worst in the American League. One player who could help solve that issue is Andrew Chafin. The moustached hurler made 64 appearances with the rival Detroit Tigers this season, going 2-3 with a 2.83 ERA while averaging 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings. Something that can lure Chafin to the White Sox is that he's already lived in Chicago, having spent a portion of the 2021 slate with the Cubs. It's never a bad idea to have another reliable lefty in the bullpen, making Chafin a player worth keeping an eye on.

3. Tyler Anderson, SP

In addition to using some bullpen help, the White Sox could afford to add a left-handed arm to their righty-filled rotation. With that in mind, why not take a swing at Tyler Anderson? He might be tempted to stay with the LA Dodgers, but Anderson also may want to cash in on the first All-Star appearance of his career. The journeyman went 15-5 with a 2.57 ERA in 30 games (28 starts), which will catch a lot of attention in free agency. Still, he could be tempted to join the White Sox due to how promising their young core is shaping up. With Anderson joining a rotation that includes Dylan Cease and potentially Johnny Cueto if he returns, Chicago could cause some damage in 2023.
