Belmont Betting Odds and Post Positions

The 2022 Belmont Stakes will be run at Belmont Park on Saturday, June 11. The race drew a field of eight of the best three-year-old dirt horses in the country. The race covers 1 ½ miles on Belmont’s sweeping, demanding dirt track. In addition to being the Test of the Champion for horses, it is also an unparalleled test for handicappers and bettors. After all, the race covers a distance that none of the horses have ever tried, meaning it requires an astute analysis of pedigree, pace, and form to pick a winner.

Belmont Stakes Betting

The majority of money bet on this race will be going the way of traditional win, place, and show bets. The online action grows each year for the Belmont Stakes, and those players using an online account who will be shaping the Belmont Stakes from an odds point of view.

Along with the win, place, and show wagers bettors can go for an Exacta or a Trifecta. These wagers task you with choosing the first two or the first three to pass the wire in the right order.  You can choose to pay more and “box” these bets though to provide some insurance, meaning your selected horses can finish in any order.

Plenty of other exotic bets will be offered too and given that the winning odds of Belmont Stakes horses can be huge, getting these wagers right can lead to a huge payday!

Don’t Let Your Belmont Stakes Bets Be Just About Stats

A lot will be said about ratings, especially speed figures,  in the build-up to the 2022 Belmont Stakes but in truth, the stats cannot and will not tell the whole story as they never do in racing.

Make sure you’ve checked out the main contenders visually, as in the case of certain potential runners it is clear in their style of running and their frame that they will improve significantly as time goes on, so factor this in when betting in this race as well as the Derby and the Preakness.

Make sure to study pedigrees as well. The Belmont covers a mile and a half, a distance many American horses are not bred to run. Check out the racing records of their sire, dam, and the other foals by their sire and dam. If any of them show Classic-distance stamina, that is a good sign that they will pass the Test of the Champion.

Another thing to consider for the Belmont Stakes is the running style of the contenders. Typically, horses with tactical speed do well in the Belmont. Though closers tend to be overbet in the Belmont because bettors notice them running well late in the Kentucky Derby, the results of the Belmont Stakes reveal that closers usually finish underneath and winners typically come from on or near the lead. This is not a hard and fast rule—with too many speed horses the Belmont just might set up for a closer—but with even a moderate pace scenario, horses on or near the lead carry more weight on the win end.

What Makes This Year's Belmont Stakes Different?

If you bet other sports, particularly NBA basketball, you may be familiar with the term “load management”: resting key players or veterans to save their energy for specific goals down the road. A very similar concept appears in the 2022 Belmont Stakes. Typically, if a horse is healthy and has enough points for the Kentucky Derby, they pursue it. Usually, if a horse wins the Kentucky Derby, their connections go straight on to the Preakness to try to win a Triple Crown.

This year, however, things worked out completely differently. Successful connections have taken more of a load management approach to the Triple Crown season. Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike, who would have contested the Belmont if he did not draw in off of the also-eligible list in Louisville, bypassed the Preakness to come to the Belmont fresh. Early Voting, who had enough points to enter the Kentucky Derby, bypassed it for the Preakness instead. Early Voting won the Preakness, but will target summer races instead of the Belmont.

In fact, no horse will race in all three Triple Crown races in 2022, a surprising and uncommon occurrence that may be a harbinger of a new, more conservative approach to campaigning three-year-old horses.
