In one of the least surprising moves of the 2021 NFL season, the Jacksonville Jaguars have officially fired head coach Urban Meyer.

Much to the relief of Jaguars players, assistant coaches and fans alike, Meyer's reign ends after less than a full season at the helm.

Who Will Be the Jaguars Next Head Coach?

Offensive coordinator Darrel Bevell will take over as the Jaguars' interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Bevell has served as an interim head coach once before, for the Detroit Lions in the 2020 season.

Their next head coach has yet to be decided, but some of the top available head coaching candidates this offseason include former Jaguars QB Byron Leftwich, Eric Bieniemy, Kellen Moore, Joe Brady and Brian Daboll.

Urban Meyer Coaching History

This season was Meyer's first year ever coaching in the NFL. He had most recently coached at Ohio State in 2018, which was the fourth different college program that he served as head coach for. His coaching career began in 1985 as a high school coach before moving up to the NCAA level in 1986.

Lambo Jaguars Kicker

One of the final nails in Meyer's coffin in Jacksonville was when a story surfaced of him kicking former Jaguars kicker Josh Lambo before practice one day.

Urban Meyer Jaguars Salary

Meyer's contract was never made public, but it is reported that he was set to make somewhere from $10 million to $12 million per season for six seasons.

Who Owns the Jaguars?

The Jacksonville Jaguars are owned by Shahid Khan. Their general manager is Trent Baalke.

Who Did Urban Meyer Coach in College

Urban Meyer was a head coach for four difference college football programs:

  • Bowling Green (2001-2002)
  • Utah (2003-2004)
  • Florida (2005-2019)
  • Ohio State (2012-2018)

Why Did Urban Meyer Leave Ohio State

Meyer retired from the Ohio State coaching job, citing that he knew he has nearing the end of his coaching career and feeling confident that he was leaving the program with the right replacement head coach in Ryan Day.
