There's no overlooking the recent trend of punts being the first drive result in the Super Bowl. Dating back to 2000, there have been 14 first drives that ended up with a punt. Only one touchdown was scored on an opening drive, and that came thanks to Devin Hester's opening kickoff return back in Super Bowl XLI (2007).

The other eight first drives resulted in four field goal attempts and four "other" results, mainly turnovers by the offense.

Targeting a punt is clearly the safest bet in this situation based on historical trends but we'll dive into the Chiefs and Eagles trends this season to show why that's a bad option for the big game. Each team has played 19 respective games until this point in the season. Of those 38 combined games, the respective offenses began the first drive on offense in just 14.

But, when these two teams get the ball first - they tend to score. Philadelphia scored points on each of the six first drives they had offensively and five of those scores came as touchdowns. Kansas City, meanwhile, held eight first drives on offense. They didn't have quite the same success, but scored two touchdowns, punted three times and kicked field goals another three.

So of the 14 combined first drives, half resulted in touchdowns. Field goal is the second most likely option on the table, happening in four of the 14. The other three were punts, all by the Chiefs.
