Michael Conforto's Baseball Career Has Reached a New Low

Updated:

The 2022 MLB season has been underway for nearly two weeks and outfielder Michael Conforto remains on the free agent market. There has been relatively no buzz on where he could land and the fact that the Long Island Ducks checked in on him represents a new low in his baseball career.

The Ducks are part of the Independent League, which is below any minor league level and not directly affiliated with the MLB in any way. The league usually acts as a way for unproven young players to make a name for themselves or for washed up ex-major leaguers to keep playing the game they love.

When it comes down to it, the idea of Conforto signing with Long Island after appearing in 125 games for the New York Mets last season is insane. The 29-year-old has smacked 132 career home runs and owns a slash line of .255/.356/.468. Conforto even made the All-Star game in 2017 due to his efforts.

The one thing that could be holding a team back from signing Conforto right now is the fact that he is attached to a qualifying offer. That means that bringing him aboard prior to the 2022 MLB Draft on July 17 would also come with the penalty of giving up a high draft pick. It's a hefty price to pay.

The Mets reportedly offered Conforto an extension in the $100-120 million range last spring, but that obviously never came to fruition. The seven-year pro better hope a team comes calling soon because independent league organizations receive a team salary of just $125,000 every season.
