List of Astros Players Facing Arbitration Hearings in 2023

Last Friday, a record 200 players were arbitration eligible, hoping to settle on contract terms and value for their services in 2023. While a large majority of them were able to agree on a number for this upcoming season with their respective clubs, 33 players failed to reach an agreement.

Unless these players are able to bridge the gap with their teams, it will be left up to an independent arbitrator to decide.

The Houston Astros are among the teams that have multiple players still eligibile for arbitration. Houston failed to agree on terms with both outfielder Kyle Tucker and pitcher Cristian Javier.

Astros Arbitration Players

Tucker has become one of the best young corner outfielders in the game and a huge piece for the Astros. The team submitted a $5 million number for Tucker, while he put in $7.5 million. That $2.5 million gap represents a tie for the largest gap of any remaining arbitration-eligible player.

Tucker put up 30 home runs in back-to-back seasons, and 107 RBI last year. Although he saw his average dip from .294 in 2021 to .257 in 2022. However, Tucker projects as someone to receive a lot of help in the batting average department with MLB's new shift-banning rules set to be put in place in 2023.

Javier broke out in 2022, starting 2.5X more games than he ever had in a season, and putting up an impressive 2.54 ERA with 194 strikeouts in 148.2 innings. The Astros submitted his number at $3 million, while he put in $3.5 million. This is a much more manageable difference than Tucker's which should give Javier a better chance at coming to an agreement and avoiding arbitration.
