3 Yankees Prospects the Royals Must Target if They Trade Andrew Benintendi

The Kansas City Royals are likely to be sellers at the 2022 MLB trade deadline as they sit at the bottom of the AL Central with a 16-31 record. Out of all the players that they could move, outfielder Andrew Benintendi is one that's drawing a lot of interest.

One of the teams rumored to be interested in Benintendi is the New York Yankees and who could blame them? The 27-year-old is batting .329 with two home runs and 20 RBIs in 173 at-bats this season and could help New York with its World Series aspirations.

Here's a look at three Yankees prospects that the Royals must target if they trade Benintendi to New York.

1. Jasson Dominguez, OF

If the Royals are to get rid of an outfielder, they may as well gain a potential future Benintendi replacement in Jasson Dominguez. The 19-year-old is someone with potential whose stock fell after an inconsistent 2021 season. Fortunately, Dominguez is looking more impressive this year, batting .274 while recording five HRs and 22 RBIs in 157 ABs with Single-A Tampa. He's committed six errors this season, which is something that needs to be worked on, but he's still fairly young and a few years away from being MLB-ready. Dominguez is considered one of New York's untouchable prospects, but Kansas City is no worse off by keeping Benintendi around. With that in mind, there's no reason to not start the negotiations off with a huge asking price.

2. Hayden Wesneski, RHP

The Royals' prospect line could use some pitching, making right-handed starter Hayden Wesneski another potential target. A former sixth-round pick in 2019, Wesneski has been having his best minor-league season to date. Although he's 1-4 in nine starts with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he still boasts a solid 2.23 ERA and 0.880 WHIP. He's only allowed three home runs and has also struck out 45 batters over 44.1 innings. Wesneski isn't far off from cracking the Majors and could help the Royals as soon as this season.

3. Everson Pereira, OF

Everson Pereira is a versatile prospect that can play all three outfield positions. He's also a quick riser, having been promoted twice last season. His 2022 High-A season has gotten off to a moderate start, tallying one homer and nine RBIs with a .271/.375/.354 slash line in 38 games played. However, Pereira's play has improved as the season has gone on, proven by him batting .375 in his last 16 ABs. If he can keep that momentum going, another promotion could be in his near future, making him that much more attractive to the Royals.
