College Football Win Total Betting: What Can We Expect From LSU in 2024?

With action on the diamond and hardwood taking over the airwaves, college football will be (temporarily) put on the back burner. However, for those gridiron fans who want to get ahead of the game, FanDuel Sportsbook has gone live with 2024 college football win totals!

The approaching campaign will feature another changing of the guard in Baton Rouge.

For the second time in the past half decade, the Louisiana State Tigers are attempting to move on from a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback. Regardless, head coach Brian Kelly -- who is entering his third campaign at post -- maintains lofty expectations for LSU.

Notably, the Southeastern Conference will be receiving a couple newcomers in the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns. Still, the Tigers will see only one of those former Big 12 programs in the coming season.

Let's dive into LSU's upcoming regular-season win total odds at FanDuel Sportsbook and take a look at both perspectives -- the over and the under. As you'd imagine, the standards here are set quite high.

Why LSU Could Win Over 9.5 Games (-110)

With star Jayden Daniels now a member of the Washington Commanders, the offense will next be led by Garrett Nussmeier. Entering his fourth season at LSU, Nussmeier already has natural familiarity in the current system.

Standing at 6-foot-2, Nussmeier offers quality height for an FBS quarterback. Additionally, he is the son of former NFL backup signal-caller Doug Nussmeier. Currently, the older Nussmeier is serving as QB coach for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Simply, the younger Nussmeier has been acquainted with the quarterback position since he was born. Also, he's already made 14 starts for the Tigers via fill-in work for Daniels. Over the past two seasons, Nussmeier managed to compile 1,391 yards with 9 touchdowns on 61.7% passing.

On the outside, Kyren Lacy will slide into the WR1 role. In 2023, Lacy hauled in seven scores for the Tigers. Additionally, his 18.6 yards per reception was the second-highest qualified clip in the SEC last season. Going forward, Nussmeier and Lacy will make their best effort to keep LSU as close as possible to their most recent scoring rate of 45.5 PPG (which paced FBS).

Coach Kelly is making tangible moves to improve a porous defense in Baton Rouge. That brings in Blake Baker as defensive coordinator for 2024. Baker comes over from the Missouri Tigers, where he spent the past two seasons in the same role.

For reference, Mizzou allowed only 20.8 PPG last year while LSU surrendered 28.0 PPG in the same conference.

If Nussmeier can deliver quality play and the Tigers' defense improves, a 10-win season is certainly on the table. But those are two big ifs.

Why LSU Could Win Under 9.5 Games (-110)

Genuinely, I think it will be rather challenging for the Tigers to reach 10 wins throughout the 2024 regular season. Still, FanDuel Sportsbook lists their 9.5 win total with -110 odds on each side.

As noted, LSU plays in college football's most competitive circuit: the SEC. Louisiana State did well to reach 10 wins in each of the past two years, but they are now replacing most starters at the offensive skill positions. On a 12-game schedule, this market allows for just two losses if playing the over.

Of course, the dual-threat Daniels was selected with the second overall pick at the 2024 NFL Draft, but superstar receivers Malik Nabers (New York Giants) and Brian Thomas Jr. (Jacksonville Jaguars) were also taken in the first round. From there, the team's leading rusher after Daniels -- tailback Logan Diggs -- has since joined the Mississippi Rebels; Louisiana State will see Diggs again on October 12th in "Death Valley."

With many new faces in new places, the Tigers will look to hit the ground running in the coming campaign. They'll start 2024 with a neural-site clash in Las Vegas on Sunday, September 1st against the Southern California Trojans. For that meeting at Allegiant Stadium, FanDuel Sportsbook currently has LSU favored by 6.5 points. Still, I'd imagine it will feel more like a home environment for USC.

Next, the Tigers will host Nicholls (FCS) before starting conference play at the South Carolina Gamecocks. From there, LSU will head back home to face the UCLA Bruins and South Alabama Jaguars. Simply, if Louisiana State hopes to win at least 10 games for the third consecutive season, they should look to hold an undefeated 5-0 record when September ends.

The intensity will ramp up for the Tigers throughout October and November. As alluded to, a high-flying Ole Miss team is in Baton Rouge on Oct. 12th. After that, LSU hits the road for two weeks, visiting the Arkansas Razorbacks and Texas A&M Aggies. A&M should be extremely competitive in 2024, so I can very much see Louisiana State falling short in College Station.

Should LSU have more than one loss by the time they host the Alabama Crimson Tide on November 9th, over bettors might be cooked in this market. The Tide should remain strong in the After Saban Era; incoming head coach Kalen DeBoer brings a dazzling resume.

If the Tigers can take down 'Bama at home, they'll still have three contests to get through. I don't see the Vanderbilt Commodores giving trouble to Coach Kelly's bunch, but the Florida Gators (Nov. 16th in Gainesville) or Oklahoma Sooners (Nov. 30th) certainly could.
