FanDuel Launches SuperSub and 120-Minute Markets for Soccer Bettors—Here's What Landon Donovan Thinks

FanDuel is enhancing soccer betting for American fans...and the 2026 World Cup is the perfect stage to do it.
At the center of that effort are two new sportsbook features designed to make soccer betting more customer friendly.
SuperSub and 120-minute markets address some of the sport's biggest betting frustrations, creating a simpler experience that better reflects how matches actually unfold.
"We see this as an opportunity to reimagine how our U.S. players wager on FanDuel’s soccer product," said Joe Cundall, Senior Director, Sportsbook Commercial at FanDuel.
SuperSub: Keeping Bets Alive When Players Are Subbed
SuperSub is designed to give customers a second chance when their selected player gets substituted during a match.

Every soccer fan has seen a player come off the bench and become the hero. With SuperSub, if the player you bet on is substituted off for any reason, your bet automatically transfers to their replacement and stays alive throughout regulation time and extra time in knockout rounds.
The Significance of Subs in Tournament Soccer
Tournament play makes SuperSub especially valuable, according to former player Landon Donovan.
World Cup teams with deep rosters have the resources to deploy world-class players as substitutes rather than starters.
"Let's use France as an example. They don't have to play the same player from the beginning of every game," Donovan said. "Their top three strikers are three of the best in the world, and their next three are also some of the best in the world. What you could absolutely see during a lot of these games is people who are normally starters coming in around the 50th, 60th, or 70th minute."
As matches progress and fatigue sets in, fresh legs late in matches can create more scoring opportunities.

"Teams can be organized for a long time but, as minutes go on, they become less and less organized," said Donovan. “The chances of that first player scoring are high, but they might be even higher for the person who gets subbed."
FanDuel sees SuperSub as more than just a functional improvement. It's an opportunity to create moments of surprise and delight for customers, especially newer or recreational soccer bettors.
"A customer may not even realize the substitute came on, got booked, or scored—and suddenly they've won their wager, said Cundall. “That's a powerful experience."
120-Minute Markets: Betting on the Full Match
FanDuel is also introducing 120-minute markets for knockout-stage matches, solving one of the most frustrating experiences in U.S. soccer betting.
"One of the biggest customer pain points was: 'Why is my wager settled as a loser when they've gone on and won in extra time?'" said Cundall.
Traditionally, soccer wagers are settled after 90 minutes, even if the match continues into extra time. With 120-minute markets, if a customer bets on a player to hit a specific outcome and that player achieves it in extra time, the wager is settled as a win.
The experience aligns more closely with how many American sports fans expect overtime to work.
The Intensity of Extra Time
From a player and coach perspective, extra time is the most psychologically and physically demanding phase of a match.
"You’re on a knife’s edge," Donovan said. "The added element is that everyone's exhausted.... There's this cat-and-mouse game of how much you try to go score, but don't leave yourself open to conceding a goal.”
For bettors, 120-minute markets unlock new opportunities, especially when one team is controlling the game but just hasn't found the back of the net.
"When you get into extra time—especially in America with the travel and heat—if you have a team that has 70% of the possession and they're just dominating but don't score, they're much more likely to score as time goes on," Donovan said.
For experienced soccer bettors, FanDuel will still offer traditional 90-minute markets that are clearly labeled. But the default experience is being built around what feels most natural to fans: the full match.
Built for the Customer
Together, SuperSub and 120-minute markets reflect FanDuel's broader approach:
“We want to be part of the broader soccer conversation—not just through wagering, but by celebrating the sporting moment itself,” said Cundall.
With the World Cup on the horizon, FanDuel is positioning itself to redefine soccer betting for U.S. fans, starting with products that put the customer experience first.
