Ahead of Argentina vs. Cape Verde, Behind the Pricing of a World Cup Fairytale

Before a ball had been kicked at this summer's World Cup, few would have predicted Cape Verde would still be standing in the knockout stages.

While that fairytale remains alive ahead of Friday's Round of 32 clash with Argentina, Cape Verde's remarkable run has also highlighted one of the biggest behind-the-scenes challenges of the tournament: accurately pricing a team that very few people know much about.

For FanDuel Senior Sports Trader Barney Spooner, that challenge meant building player markets for one of soccer's least-documented teams.

"It was one of the more interesting teams to research," said Spooner. "When you go back to African World Cup qualifying there was almost no footage, and even the stats themselves were pretty sparse."

Building Prices from Almost Nothing

The expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams significantly increased the amount of work required to prepare markets before the tournament. There are 104 games instead of 64, which means there are smaller teams at the tournament.

The FanDuel team began with a light-hearted World Cup-style draw, with each nation assigned to a dedicated trader. While some teams went to colleagues with personal or cultural connections, others were allocated at random. Spooner drew Cape Verde.

Together, the trading team assessed more than 1,200 players and priced around 50,000 player selections ahead of the tournament. Each trader built a detailed profile of their assigned nation, covering likely line-ups, tactics, player roles, and recent form to help inform player pricing.

For established football nations, building player markets is supported by years of detailed statistical data and extensive video analysis. Teams like Cape Verde present a very different challenge.

"For England you can see every pass, every shot, every foul," Spooner said. "There just isn't that depth of information for African qualifying. You've got to work out who's going to start, who's likely to score, who's on penalties and how many minutes they'll play. That all had to be built almost from scratch."

Spooner had to rely on limited information—some of it over a year old—but it didn't take long for his work to be recognized.

"When Cape Verde's first World Cup team was announced, nine of the starting XI matched the team I'd projected. That was a pretty rewarding moment."

Since then, Cape Verde has become one of the stories of the tournament, advancing to the knockout stages through disciplined defending and organized performances.

"They've been really difficult to break down," Spooner said. "They've got through by staying compact, conceding very few goals, and making games awkward."

The Ultimate Test

Standing between Cape Verde and a place in the quarterfinals is Argentina: a team lead by the World Cup’s all-time leading goal scorer, Lionel Messi.

Cape Verde’s odds to make it to the next round are set at +1060 as of Friday morning.

Spooner expects another disciplined performance from the tournament's surprise package:

"They'll try to keep it tight, take it to extra time, and maybe penalties," he said. "A player like Messi unlocks those low blocks."

Whether Cape Verde's remarkable run continues remains to be seen. But for FanDuel's trading team, their success has already demonstrated the value of combining detailed soccer expertise with careful analysis—even when the available information is in short supply.
