What is a Prop Bet?

A Prop bet (Proposition bet) is a wager on a specific event within a game that doesn't directly affect the final score. Examples include betting on which player will score first, how many strikeouts a pitcher will throw, or whether a quarterback will pass for over 300 yards.

How do Prop bets work?

Prop bets can be on a wide range of outcomes and options, including something that a player does within the game, something the team does, or even unique events.

Types of Prop Bets:

  1. Player Props: Bet on individual performance (passing yards, touchdowns, rebounds)
  2. Team Props: Bet on team-specific outcomes (first to score, total points)
  3. Game Props: Bet on broader in-game events (coin toss, first play type, overtime)

  4. What are some tips for Prop Betting:

    1. No need to pick a winner or understand point Spreads
    2. Some Props settle within minutes of a game starting
    3. New Props can appear live as the game unfolds
    4. Easy to understand and ideal for beginner bettors

    5. What is an example of a Prop Bet?

Prop bets displayed on FanDuel will have their own odds and presentation. As an example, we’ll look at a FanDuel Sportsbook live NFL game, specifically, looking at a receiving yards Prop for multiple players.

      • Noah Fant (Line: 47.5 receiving yards)
        Over 47.5 (-115)

        Under 47.5 (-110)

      • Amon-Ra St. Brown (Line: 47.5 receiving yards)
        Over: -115

        Under: -115

      • Josh Reynolds (Line: 31.5 receiving yards)
        Over: -115

        Under: -110

How to Read Prop Betting Odds?

Using the example above, here's how to break down what you're seeing: Prop bets on FanDuel have two key parts: a Stat Line and Odds.

      • Stat line: The benchmark number (e.g., 47.5 yards). Bet Over or Under that number.
      • Odds: The number next to Over/Under (e.g., -115) tells you how much to wager to win $100 in profit.

If you bet the Over 47.5 (-115) on Noah Fant, he must gain more than 47.5 receiving yards for your bet to win. If you bet the Under 47.5 (-110), he must finish with fewer than 47.5 yards.

The -115 or -110 listed next to each Prop shows the odds for that bet, meaning you'd wager $115 (or $110) to win $100 in profit.

      Quick Tips:

      1. .5 lines (like 47.5) eliminate ties, so there's always a clear winner
      2. Negative odds (e.g., -110, -115) mean a balanced, likely outcome
      3. Positive odds (e.g., +250) mean a less likely outcome with a bigger payout
