James White Status

New England's James White (hip) retires after eight seasons
What it means
New England Patriots running back James White (hip) announced his retirement on Thursday. After a serious hip injury, White has decided to end his eight-year career as New England's primary receiving back. Expect Rhamondre Stevenson or Ty Montgomery to see a bump in snaps and playing time as the Patriots' new receiving specialist behind Damien Harris. Per numberFire's season-long projections, Stevenson's 2022 receiving expectations include 35.8 receptions for 261.5 yards and 1.5 touchdowns while Montgomery's projection includes 14.8 receptions for 125.8 yards and 0.9 touchdowns. In 95 career games, White accounted for 319 rushing attempts for 1278 yards and 11 touchdowns in addition to 381 receptions for 3278 yards and 25 receiving touchdowns.

Patriots place James White (hip) on active/ PUP list
What it means
New England Patriots running back James White (hip) was placed on the active/PUP list on Thursday. White's potential return status remains in limbo while New England's veteran recovers from his hip injury suffered in Week 3 of the 2021 season. While White awaits clearance, Rhamondre Stevenson is a potential candidate to share work with Damien Harris in a probable run-heavy attack led by a Patriots' offensive line rated seventh by Pro Football Focus. White's current yearly projection includes 29.1 rushing attempts for 121.3 yards and 45.3 receptions for 353.4 yards and 2.4 touchdowns.

Patriots' James White still recovering from 2021 hip injury
What it means
New England Patriots running back James White "was still walking with what appeared to be an uncomfortable gait" according to ESPN's Mike Reiss. White has been a participant at the Patriots' offseason programs, but has yet to graduate past the rehab field. As Reiss notes, we'll have a clearer picture of White's health when training camp begins in late July. If White were to miss any time, his absence could provide a boost to teammates Damien Harris (numberFire's RB25) and Rhamondre Stevenson (RB35) for fantasy purposes. Brandon Bolden, who followed offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to Las Vegas this offseason, caught a career-high 41 passes last season after White's injury, exemplifying what has come to be known as the "James White role" in their offense. That role led Bolden to become a fantasy-relevant player in PPR leagues last season, and could vault either of Harris and Stevenson into the top of the RB rankings if either were to earn the whole role for themselves.
