Fantasy Football: Week 14 Personnel Tendencies

With the Drew Lock era underway, the Broncos have been doing work with two tight ends. Which other formations have been working for teams?

Durham Smythe Status

rotoWire
Smythe secured 15 of 20 targets for 129 yards and one score across 16 games with Miami in the 2022 regular season. He also handled two carries for one yard and a touchdown.

What it means:

Smythe and Mike Gesicki both saw their receiving stats plummet under coach Mike McDaniel in 2022, which coincided with the Dolphins' usage of two-tight-end sets dropping mightily. Both Smythe and Gesicki are headed for free agency this offseason, making the position an area of uncertainty for Miami. If the Dolphins do decide to keep someone with familiarity in the system atop the depth chart, it would be far more affordable to re-sign Smythe than Gesicki.
rotoWire
Smythe secured three of five targets for 39 yards during Sunday's 11-6 win over the Jets.

What it means:

Smythe recorded his best receiving performance of the year in Miami's regular-season finale, a game which saw Skylar Thompson rely heavily on short-yardage completions to tight ends and running backs. If Tua Tagovailoa (concussion) or Teddy Bridgewater (finger) is healthy enough to suit up for Sunday's playoff matchup in Buffalo, it would stand to reason that Smythe will revert to his normal role, which involves more blocking than route running.
rotoWire
Smythe secured his only target for nine yards during Sunday's 23-21 win over the Patriots.

What it means:

Smythe has put together three straight games with just one catch, and he's still looking for his first receiving score of the season. The tight end remains off the fantasy radar heading into a Week 18 regular-season finale against the Jets, while Mike Gesicki (four targets and one score Sunday) is at least showing signs of life.
rotoWire
Smythe secured his only target for eight yards during Sunday's 26-20 loss to the Packers.

What it means:

Smythe played 62 percent of offensive snaps during Sunday's loss, but his role once again involved more blocking than receiving work. Considering that Smythe hasn't topped 25 receiving yards yet in a game this season, he can safely be left off the fantasy radar when the Dolphins take on the Patriots in a must-win Week 17 divisional contest.
rotoWire
Smythe (quadriceps) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Packers, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports.

What it means:

The tight end should be good to go without any restrictions after a full practice Friday. Smythe gets plenty of playing time but is used primarily as a blocker in a Dolphins offense that isn't hurting for options in the passing game.
rotoWire
Smythe (quadriceps) was a limited participant during practice Thursday.

What it means:

Smythe has now been limited during each of the first two practices to begin Week 16 prep. The 27-year-old was also limited with quad and knee injuries last Tuesday before working his way back in full before Saturday's loss to Buffalo. While it's unclear if he's dealing with the same quad issue Week 16, Smythe will have another practice to increase his activity before the Dolphins have to assign him an official status for Sunday's game against the Packers.
