The Cardinals and Blough (head) agreed to terms on a one-year contract Monday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
What it means:
Blough started the final two games of the 2023 campaign with Kyler Murray (ACL) and Colt McCoy (undisclosed) unavailable, combining for 402 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions on 65.5 percent passing. However, Blough departed early Week 18 to be checked for a concussion and was unable to return. Presumably past the injury, he'll rejoin a QB room that still employs a rehabbing Murray and McCoy and healthy Trace McSorley, meaning Blough may be in line for significant reps during the offseason program.
Blough was examined for a head injury during Sunday's contest at San Francisco.
What it means:
The Cardinals made the announcement near the end of the third quarter, and if Blough is unable to return, he'll end Week 18 having completed 14 of 18 passes for 180 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, while turning two carries into minus-2 yards and losing a fumble. With Kyler Murray (knee) on IR and Colt McCoy (concussion) inactive Sunday, Trace McSorley took over for Blough under center.
Blough will start Sunday's game against the 49ers, Tyler Drake of ArizonaSports.com reports.
What it means:
Coach Kliff Kingsbury made the announcement Wednesday, ruling out Colt McCoy (concussion) in the process. Blough got his first start for Arizona in last week's 20-19 loss to Atlanta, completing 24 of 40 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown. Dual-threat Trace McSorley is the other QB on the roster.
Blough completed 24 of 40 passes for 222 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 20-19 loss to the Falcons.
What it means:
Blough got a spot start with Colt McCoy sidelined by a concussion. He showed some competence even without the benefit of targeting DeAndre Hopkins (knee), and he connected regularly with Trey McBride and Marquise Brown. Blough threw his lone touchdown of the game early in the second quarter on a four-yard toss to Trey McBride. It remains to be seen who will be under center for Arizona in Week 18 for a matchup against the 49ers.
Blough will start Sunday's game in Atlanta with Colt McCoy bothered by concussion symptoms again, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports.
What it means:
Blough signed with the Cardinals less than three weeks ago and now gets the nod over Trace McSorley, who had three turnovers and only 4.8 yards per pass attempt in last week's loss to Tampa Bay. While not as mobile as McSorley, the 27-year-old Blough is likely at least somewhat more accurate as a passer, though he completed only 54 percent of his throws while going 0-5 as a starter for the Lions back in 2019. He didn't have much help in his Detroit days, and that could be the case again this Sunday with DeAndre Hopkins uncertain due to a late-week knee injury.
Colt McCoy (concussion) will not play in Week 17, David Blough to start at quarterback for Cardinals
What it means:
Arizona Cardinals quarterback David Blough will start in Week 17's game against the Atlanta Falcons.
Blough will make his first start for the Cardinals after Colt McCoy experienced concussion symptoms on Friday. The Falcons currently rank 18th (23.0) in FanDuel points allowed per game to quarterbacks.
On 184 career pass attempts, Blough has accounted for 4 touchdowns, 1033 yards, a 68.5% adjusted completion rate, and a 3.5% big time throw percentage.
