The Comeback with Craig Carton S2 E2: The Offshore Gambling Trap Part 1
In this episode of The Comeback, Craig Carton speaks with Richie, a gambler in the early stages of recovery, about how his gambling escalated after he moved from legal, regulated sportsbooks to offshore crypto casinos.
Richie describes being drawn to these platforms through social media influencers and aggressive bonus offers and promotions. Unlike regulated operators, the offshore sites he used extended credit even after he had exhausted his own funds, creating a continuous cycle that allowed him to keep gambling rather than step away.
At one point, Richie began recruiting friends to the platforms in exchange for more credit or relief from his own gambling debts, further demonstrating how the offshore model encouraged him to remain in action at virtually any cost.
Richie also explains how these unregulated platforms lacked any basic consumer protections. Even after attempting to self exclude, he created a new account by using a VPN, selecting a foreign address, and generating false identification. There was no meaningful barrier preventing him from immediately returning to play.
By comparison, legal, regulated operators are required to verify customer identities, follow advertising and promotional restrictions and offer self exclusion programs designed to prevent customers who have opted out from continuing to wager.
Gambling within the regulated market is not risk free and regulation alone may not have prevented Richie from developing problematic behavior. But Richie’s story shows how the absence of guardrails on offshore crypto casinos intensified and prolonged his struggle.
Direct credit, influencer marketing, rewards tied to continued wagering and the failure to honor self-exclusion gave Richie more opportunities and incentives to keep gambling when he had already lost control.
The regulated market cannot eliminate gambling harm, but its operators implement important safeguards, accountability and intervention points that were entirely absent from the platforms that enabled Richie’s addiction to spiral.
