White Sox Owner Dodges Question on Ozzie Guillen Rumors

Updated:

As MLB free agency is right around the corner, the Chicago White Sox continue their search to find a new manager. The club has already interviewed a handful of fresh faces for the position, but one name that keeps popping up in rumors is one that the White Sox are familiar with: Ozzie Guillen.

MLB analyst Bruce Levine reported earlier this week that Guillen could be a candidate for the vacant position. When asked about the rumor by New York Post's Jon Heyman, White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf replied (via email) that "I don’t comment on rumors."

White Sox Manager Rumors

Guillen managed the White Sox from 2004 to 2011, going 678-617 over that stretch. The team won 90-plus games on two separate occasions, including a 99-win performance in 2005 — the same year that the White Sox won their most recent World Series title.

The fact that Reinsdorf didn't rule out Guillen is interesting. On one hand, it's been 10 years since the 58-year-old last managed an MLB club. However, it had also been a decade since Tony La Russa held his last managerial position before Chicago brought him in, so the organization isn't afraid of reaching out to the past for help.

Guillen made a name for himself by being one of the most colorful personalities in baseball. He's always had a knack for getting his players to buy in and is still young enough to adapt to the MLB's new era. In other words, he's exactly what the White Sox need after last year's shortcomings.

At the end of the day, it'll be interesting to see if the White Sox truly have an interest in their former manager. Guillen has spent the last few years as an analyst for NBC Sports Chicago, so who knows if he's willing to leave what's likely a less stressful gig to return to a gruelling 162-game schedule.

If the White Sox do make an offer to him, it needs to be a good one.
