The Minnesota Vikings currently have about $3.3 million in cap space according to Spotrac, an amount that puts them in the bottom quarter of the league (26th ranked). They also still have multiple holes to fill on this roster.

But that didn't stop them from managing to plug one minor area of need this morning.

Ameer Abdullah is set to rejoin the Vikes as the third running back on the depth chart behind Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison. He's also an asset in the special teams department, primarily as a kick returner.

It may not be the signing Minnesota fans were hoping for, with the offensive line still in shambles, as well as needs at safety and defensive end, but it does help the 2021 roster. Not only does Abdullah provide some extra security behind Cook, who has dealt with injuries throughout his career, he is the type of player that can wear multiple hats (an important trait in a year were cap and roster space is at a premium).

The Vikings have not been overly active in free agency, but they have made a few key moves. Joining the 2021 roster so far are defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson, cornerback Patrick Peterson, defensive lineman Stephen Weatherly and kicker Greg Joseph among others.
