Trey Lance Makes Cryptic Social Media Post After Ran Carthon's Departure

Updated:

The San Francisco 49ers suffered their first personnel loss of the broader NFL offseason this week when Ran Carthon was hired by the Tennessee Titans for their GM job. Carthon played a key role in talent evaluation, especially at the college level, so he'll certainly be missed by the organization.

Niners quarterback Trey Lane was one player selected during Carthon's time, and the signal-caller made a possibly cryptic social media post on the latter's departure.

Lance posted a picture of Carthon with three fingers crossed emojis to his Instagram story after news of Carthon's hiring in Tennessee broke. On the surface, looks like a harmless post celebrating someone he likely got to know over his two years as a 49er.

However, some have wondered if there's a deeper meaning behind Lance's social media activity. If he is a big fan of Carthon, who's now a GM of a team without a clear starting QB, could that lead to a move one day? It's a bold assumption, but the question has been raised.

This even being a talking point speaks to the uncertainty around Lance and the 49ers in 2023. There's reports San Francisco may pursue a veteran this offseason so Lance can spend another year learning the ropes following a shaky start to the 2022 campaign. That's also without mentioning rookie signal-caller Brock Purdy, who's doing an incredible job leading this offense during a playoff run.

The questions surrounding Kyle Shanahan's plan for Lance next season should be answered soon. For now, though, the speculation will continue to run rampant.
