The Detroit Lions have finished last in the NFC North for two straight years. After going 3-12-1 in 2019, it's clear they need to make some major improvements to challenge the Green Bay Packers next year.

If the Lions want to make up ground and hurt the Packers, they should consider signing one of Green Bay's free agents in 2021. Defensive tackle Kenny Clark is a perfect target for the Lions to add in free agency next year.

It's no secret that the Lions have major defensive line issues. The Lions finished 28th in overall defensive DVOA and 23rd in adjusted sack rate last season, both major factors in their 12 losses. The Lions tried to address this by signing Danny Shelton and Jamie Collins from the New England Patriots, but they still have major holes. Inside linebacker Jarrad Davis, one of their few reliable pass rushers, will also be a free agent in 2021.

Kenny Clark is one of the best defensive tackles in football. At just 24, he's had 6 sacks in his last two seasons while providing excellent run defense. Clark was a big reason the Packers won 13 games last year and had a top 10 pass defense by DVOA. His versatility, skill, and youth are going to earn him a huge payday in 2020.

The Packers have several key players hitting free agency in 2021 and they can't keep all of them. Because the Packers failed to address key concerns in the NFL Draft, they're just asking for a team to make a huge offer to Clark. With David Bakhtiari, Aaron Jones, and Kevin King also in need of contracts, Clark could easily be lost in transition.

At the very least, the Lions should use their ample cap room to raise Clark's asking price. A young interior pass rusher like Clark will command a huge market value, and the Lions would be foolish to let the Packers re-sign him cheaply. Of course, signing Clark outright would be a coup for the Lions, as it would firmly address their long-term defensive line health while depriving the Packers of an elite young star.

If the Lions want to hurt the Packers and start to improve in the long-term, signing Kenny Clark would be a great start.
