The Seahawks lost starting running back Rashaad Penny to a season-ending knee injury in Week 5 and wasted no time adding depth to the roster. Seattle beat out multiple teams such as the Denver Broncos and Arizona Cardinals in their claim for former New Orleans Saints ball-carrier Tony Jones.

Seattle Seahawks News

Jones originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame in 2020 and spent most of his rookie season stuck on the practice squad. He was called up to serve as starter Alvin Kamara's primary backup in 2021, but a nagging ankle injury held him to just 142 yards on 54 carries.

This was crucial move for the Seahawks to make as third-down back Travis Homer also finds himself sidelined with an injury of his own. A rib issue has him placed on the injured reserve. The current backfield in Seattle features rookie Kenneth Walker III, third-year pro Deejay Dallas and now Jones.

Jones has yet to break off a run for more than 11 yards in his career, so expect him to be more involved as a receiving threat. After all, Walker has not shown much expertise in that area of the game. He showed off his ground-and-pound running style with 88 yards on 8 carries in Week 5.

Seeing the Cardinals and Broncos put in a claim for Jones is not surprising. Arizona is dealing with injuries to two of their top three running backs in James Conner and Darrel Williams. Meanwhile, Denver is in search of additional depth after losing young starter Javonte Williams to a torn ACL.

The Seahawks have odds set at +50000 to win Super Bowl 57, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
