The 2022 MLB season has been nothing short of a disaster for the Cincinnati Reds, who sit in the NL Central's basement with a 9-24 record. The club was then kicked when it was down when the Reds were forced to place star first baseman Joey Votto on the COVID-19 list almost two weeks ago.

The good news is that Votto's recovery is heading in the right direction. The Reds announced on Saturday that the 38-year-old slugger has been sent to Triple-A Louisville to begin his rehab stint.

Joey Votto COVID Update

An exact return date to the Reds' lineup is still unknown, however, he'll likely be back sooner than later assuming that his rehab assignment goes well.

The hope is that the time on away from baseball did Votto some good. He was batting .122 with nine hits and three RBIs in 74 at-bats before his bout with COVID — easily the worst performance of his MLB career.

On the other hand, the Reds have actually done better without Votto than with him this season. They're 6-5 since he ended up on the injured list and have won three straight games entering Saturday. It'll be interesting to see if that momentum continues upon his return or not.

The Votto-less Reds will search for their fourth consecutive win when they visit the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday evening. FanDuel Sportsbook is currently listing Cincinnati as the -116 moneyline road favorite while Pittsburgh is -102 at home.
