NASCAR Fantasy Picks for Cook Out Southern 500
Austin Dillon took home the checkered flag in last week's Coke Zero Sugar 400. Now racing fans will turn their attention to Darlington for this week's Cook Out Southern 500 on Sunday.
As the next Cup Series race rapidly approaches with a 6 p.m. ET start time on Sunday, Sept. 4, let's take a look at some drivers to consider when building your fantasy lineup to win the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway this week.
Darlington Fantasy Picks This Week
There's no denying that having track experience comes in handy for NASCAR drivers. Keep in mind Kyle Larson has led 17.4% of laps at Darlington over the last three seasons, which trails only Martin Truex Jr.'s (22.3%). He has also posted three top-five finishes over his last four races here. Larson has come so close to being the first car through the checkered flag and that has to give him some motivation to show out on Sunday. The 30-year-old is the co-favorite in the odds (+600), according to FanDuel Sportsbook, so this is not exactly a trendy suggestion. It's never a bad idea to back a driver that already has two wins on the year, though.
Much like Larson, Kevin Harvick has found a ton of success at Darlington. He owns three victories and 11 top-five finishes in his last 13 races at the track. In fact, his average finish position during that span is an impressive 3.8. Harvick also took home the win at Richmond earlier in the year, which is a track that lines up similarly to Darlington with its significant tire falloff. It's important to note that's something other drivers may have a hard time adjusting to. Harvick sits a bit lower in the odds right now, but a strong qualifying run would certainly catapult the veteran pro toward the top.
NASCAR fans looking for a sleeper in this weeks' race should look no further than Erik Jones. Jones owns the sixth-best driver rating of all-time at Darlington, according to Motor Racing Network, and won the Southern 500 in 2019. He also placed top-10 in stages 1 and 2 at Darlington in the spring before he got caught up in an accident. All in all, Jones has a shot to shock some people with a strong showing on Sunday on a track he knows how to excel on. However, he remains underrated heading into this year's race as showcased by his +5500 odds to win.
