The Chicago White Sox are fighting hard to come back from an underwhelming start to the 2022 MLB season. They're still below .500 with a 38-40 record, but only trail the AL Central-leading Minnesota Twins by 5.5 games — a surpassable deficit.
The White Sox could turn to the trade market for some help to catch the Twins. One area that can be improved is the outfield, leading to an MLB insider saying that Chicago should pursue Cincinnati Reds outfielder Tommy Pham ahead of next month's deadline.
White Sox Trade Rumors
It isn't much of a surprise to see ESPN's David Schoenfield suggesting that the White Sox pursue Pham. The duo of AJ Pollock and Adam Engel have combined for just five home runs and 34 RBIs this season, opening the door for an acquisition like Pham.
The 34-year-old Reds outfielder is bouncing back well from a disappointing 2021 campaign. Pham has 11 HRs and 34 RBIs through 70 games this season, putting him on pace for 24 homers and 75 RBIs if he plays the same number of games (155) as he did last year.
Pham might not be the flashiest name available, but he's affordable given that he's on an expiring contract. The White Sox don't want to mortgage the future if a playoff appearance isn't guaranteed, making the Las Vegas, NV native a realistic trade target.
Acquiring Pham won't turn the White Sox into instant World Series contenders, but he can give them a much-needed jolt to help turn the season around before it's too late.
White Sox World Series Odds
After opening the 2022 season as championship contenders, FanDuel Sportsbook has the White Sox available at +3500 (No. 13) to win the World Series. Those aren't the worst odds, but it shows that the club needs to make serious improvements before it's taken seriously again.
