The Detroit Lions added another running back on Wednesday, signing Justin Jackson from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of their Week 2 matchup with the Washington Commanders.

While the Lions may simply be adding RB depth behind D'Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams, this move sparks concern that Swift may be dealing with an injury.

The Jackson signing comes on the heels of Swift not practicing on Wednesday.

Swift was terrific during the team's Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, racking up 175 yards from scrimmage and scoring a touchdown. He may have suffered an injury towards the end of the game, however, during Detroit's furious fourth-quarter comeback attempt.

Lions fans are hoping Wednesday was merely a maintenance day for Swift, who's dealt with injuries in the past and has yet to play more than 13 games in an NFL season. Swift received similar off days last year to help keep him healthy, so perhaps that's the case here as well, especially after carrying such a heavy workload on Sunday.

If Swift has a lingering injury and is unable to suit up this week, Williams would take over as Detroit's lead back with Jackson slotting in behind him. Jackson served as one of Austin Ekeler's backups with the Los Angeles Chargers from 2018-2021, earning seven starts along the way and compiling 1,040 rushing yards with 4 touchdowns.

The Lions are hopeful that Swift can play this week, as he's their top offensive weapon when healthy. Detroit could use him for Sunday's tilt against Washington with the Lions favored by 1.5 points at home on FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds.
