As the NFL season nears, D'Andre Swift's fantasy outlook for the 2021 season continues to grow murky. He's still en route to be the No. 1 running back in the Detroit Lions offense, but some recent news around his injury status clouds his early season value.

On Tuesday, head coach Dan Campbell expressed that he is concerned Swift may not be able to get his wind fully back in time for Week 1. The second-year back continues to rehab from a groin injury.

D'Andre Swift Fantasy Value

By all means, Swift still projects as a reliable top-20 running back for fantasy managers heading into 2021. But, with all the excitement around his new role and the Lions' revamped offensive line, Swift garnered some early offseason hype.

The young running back enters his second season with an average draft position (ADP) of 31.6 and RB17, according to PPR data from FantasyPros. He averaged 12.3 touches per game last season, which ranked 33rd in the NFL. Those numbers look poised to take a step up as Swift no longer competes with Adrian Peterson.

But it's not like he has the backfield all to himself now. Detroit also brought in Jamaal Williams to add help behind Swift on the Lions' running back depth chart. And the latest comments from his head coach provide some more pause.

It might not be worth spending a Round 3 fantasy draft pick on Swift given these concerns around his early-season role. If Swift is unable to get back to 100% before Week 1 kickoff, don't be surprised to see Williams earn some reps with the first team.

D'Andre Swift ADP

Swift ranks as RB13 according to The Duel's preseason fantasy football rankings. There's far less question marks surrounding some of the other running backs drafted near that spot, including Nick Chubb and Joe Mixon. Keep that in mind before spurring an early Round 3 pick on Swift this season.
