A definitive powerhouse in the American Athletic Conference, the Houston Cougars are no strangers to participating in March Madness. The school has enjoyed plenty of success in the men's NCAA Tournament, including several deep tourney runs.

With the team still playing in March once again, many are wondering if capturing the national championship would be a first for Houston. Here's what you need to know about the Cougar's March Madness history.

Has Houston Ever Won March Madness?

The Houston's men's basketball team has never won March Madness. The Cougars are one of 12 teams left in the 2023 tournament that has yet to win a National Championship.

Has Houston Ever Made the Final Four?

The Cougars have made the men's NCAA Tournament Final Four six times, which is tied for the 10th-highest mark all-time. Those appearances came in 1967, 1968, 1982, 1983, 1984 and 2021.

Houston was one of the last four teams standing just two years ago before it fell to Baylor by a score of 78-59. It had defeated 15-seed Cleveland State, 10-seed Rutgers, 11-seed Syracuse and 12-seed Oregon State to reach that point.

How Many Times Has Houston Made the Elite 8?

Houston's men's basketball team has made the Elite 8 six times and has advanced to the Final Four in each of those appearances. They are one of only two teams to make each of the last two Elite 8's (Arkansas). Both the Cougars and Razorbacks remain alive in the 2023 men's NCAA Tournament.

How Many Times Has Houston Made the Sweet 16?

Houston has made the Sweet 16 on 14 occasions. That includes each of the last four NCAA Tournaments. The full list of years in which the Cougars reached the Sweet 16 is as follows: 1956, 1961, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1970, 1971, 1982, 1983, 1984, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
