The Ken Giles experiment clearly did not work out in San Francisco. The veteran reliever was released on Tuesday morning just one week after signing a minor league contract with the Giants. He made three appearances at the Triple-A level, but will look to make his way back to the majors elsewhere.

Giles joined the Giants after being designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners in early August. He had pitched 4.1 clean innings of work, allowing only one hit and striking out six batters, prior to being cut loose. Seattle's depth in the bullpen ultimately left nowhere for the 31-year-old to fill in.

As for his time spent with the Sacramento River Cats, Giles gave up one earned run on two hits and two walks across 2.2 innings. The fact that he couldn't find a role in a San Francisco bullpen that ranks 23rd in ERA (4.25) and continues to struggle on a nightly basis spells trouble for Giles in the future.

Giles is one of only eight relief pitchers in baseball to have at least 400 strikeouts and an ERA below 3.00 since the beginning of the 2014 season. While he used to go by the nickname "100 miles Giles", his fastball velocity has dipped into the mid 90's, which has limited his effectiveness on the mound.

Injuries have marred his career more than anything else, though. Giles missed all of 2021 recovering from Tommy John surgery and has dealt with finger/shoulder issues in 2022. It'll be interesting to see if another MLB squad gives him a shot to bounce back in September or in the upcoming offseason.
