Dolphins Get Discouraging Byron Jones Injury Update Ahead of Week 5

Updated:

The Miami Dolphins' secondary is hurting heading into Week 5. Already down cornerbacks Byron Jones and Trill Williams, CB Xavien Howard is also nursing a groin injury and appears questionable for this Sunday.

Now Miami has received some discouraging news on Jones' potential return in Week 5.

Head coach Mike McDaniel said Wednesday Jones is not going to practice right now since his recovery is "not progressing as we'd hoped." His comments seem to suggest the Pro Bowl cornerback won't have a chance to suit up in Week 5, and he could be sidelined even longer.

This is certainly a disappointing development. This week is the first Jones was eligible to return from the injured reserve list, so he had a chance to finally practice with the Dolphins once again. Instead, his 21-day window will remain unused until he is able to make it on the field.

The Dolphins' defense has clearly been impacted by their current injuries. They've given up the fifth-most yards over the first four games, and the 299.3 passing yards per game they've allowed is the second-highest figure in the league. It's hard to see those weaknesses improving until this unit gets back to full strength.

Having Jones back in the secondary would be one way to give this team a huge boost. His progress from Achilles surgery will be a major storyline heading into the second month of the season.
